Doesn't it drive you mad sometimes? Different teachers, different styles, different areas, different names for different movements! What do you call what? Is there a list of moves or something? What do you call the hip drop kick thing? What really is a camel (I heard so many different variations!) or a basic arabic step? Help! Please!!!!

I gave up a *long* time ago - LOL

I think I now know about 5 different names for every belly dance move....

When we teach my partner and I try to tell our students "We are now going to learn snake arms, also knows as cobra arms, water arms, ripple arms and arabic arms."

Back when we frist started learning tribal & ATS it got even more interesting. We do Gypsy Caravan ATS (and other styles) and some of their moves have the same names as *different* cabaret moves.
I made a cross reference chart when we first started learning that - LOL

It does depend on what style you are doing. If it is traditional bellydance, listen to what Jamila Salimpour has named the moves, since she was basically the first lady to begin documenting what regional dancers were calling their moves when she watched them perform in the first Greek and Arabic restaurants.
Her daughter, on the other hand, has completely broken down movements into rhythmic counts, and so names them for where they fall on the count in which direction. And ATS is completely different. And then dancers that have gone to the Mideast and studied with regional dancers call things differently as well.
