Hey everyone!
I had corrective surgery for scoliosis when I was 14. It was 13 years ago, that I had 4 vertebrae in the middle of my spine fused and had 2 rods put in for support. These rods start between my shoulder blades and end just below my natural waistline.
I started dancing about 5 months ago and haven't had any big problems yet, except a lot of lower back pain. My rib cage doesn't move as much as I'd like it to, either. Though I am sore a lot, this is just sore muscle pain, not injury pain, so on and on I keep dancing. I even take 3 classes a week!
I'm just wondering if there are others like me who still insist on dancing, and are maybe wondering if there are others like them?

Re: Dancing with Back Problems
Fri, November 12, 2004 - 10:46 AMHi! And congrats on dancing!!
I actually was more or less crippled by by back handicap (I'll tell you more off board...), when a short while ago a friend pushed me this way. Long story short, between stubborness and my GODDESS of a Doctor/chiropractor/angel and my friends, I get to walk and talk and run with the rest of the kids!!!! It's amazing I can touch the floor and move without so much pain. It's hard though and it hurts at times. Keep it up. Keep working on it.
As one of the best and my favorite teacher in my life, Ansuya says "Grind through it." It'll come. ")
Namaste (I bow to you)

Fri, November 12, 2004 - 11:03 AMHey thanks! Yeah, "grinding" through it sounds about correct.
I will say this, I was never able to get my back to crack before... now when it does, I'm in Lah Lah Land. :) I'll never be able to touch my toes or do a back bend though. That kinda sucks.
Anyway, enough about me! Please send me an e-mail, I'm very curious to hear what happened!

Re: Dancing with Back Problems
Fri, November 12, 2004 - 4:57 PMHi,
You might want to consider streching your hip flexors and most importantly your soais (sp?) pronounced (So - As) A lot of lower back pain is actually from that set of muscles that attach in the front of your pelvis go diagnally up through your body and wrap up to 6 sets of vertibrae in your back.
Prolonged sitting and standing helps to shorten these muscles that should be as long as 17" . When they become shortend over time (by not knowing how to strech them out) it likes to do is pull your lower back down and forward. Causing a lot of lower back pain.
I work in high tech and sit behind a desk 70% of my day. I've been belly dancing for 6 plus years and until 1 year ago when I started taking Pilates I could not stop the deep pain in my lower back. I know how important it is to have really strong abs to help support your back even after I had improved them I still had issues with my back. In the end it was my soais causing the problem the whole time.
Since pilates I have no more back pain.
I know your situation is a bit different but I think it would still help you.
Good Luck.
