hi all Im new *waves*
I had an emergency csection with my son nearly 3 years ago and I still have no feeling below my navel area to the top of my csection scar.
Ive always been a dancer (ballet when young, ballroom during my teens and tradition dancing all through).
I was just thinking of belly dancing for some bizarre reason and the moves, I was wondering if maybe I had go at some lessons I might encourage some feeling back...kinda like using dance for healing...but I really hate my tummy at the moment and am nervous.
I emailed a few people to find out about local classes but I can someone tell me if it will be harder because I have a lack of feeling down there?
Is there any type of belly dancing I should consider?
I think I will just try anyways but it would be good to hear from anyone who has had a similar sort of experience.
Thanks...hoping some experienced ladies can help me out.
Kristi

Re: getting feeling back
Wed, August 2, 2006 - 10:09 AMI am not a mother so I have no idea what it must be like to have nerve damage from a c-section, but I can't see that bellydance would be a problem, since you're actually using your legs & knees for most of the movements involving the hips. (of course, as I said, I don't have the benefit [for lack of a better word!] of your experience, so I can't say for sure). -

Re: getting feeling back
Wed, August 2, 2006 - 6:02 PMThank for posting,
I have organised a lesson with a lady called amythest for next week, she sounds nice.
I am really drawn to the idea of bellydancing and have been for a while now, part of it is the stomach and how it moves, I cant control my lower abdominal muscles at all, and part of it is the confidence that the bellydancers seem to have in their bodies. Guess I just want to feel beautiful and sensual too : )
I have really low self esteem from what happened to my body and Im trying all sorts of different things to kind of empower myself again. If all goes well I will be recommending bellydancing to the ladies in my support group...we all have similar issues about body and self confidence.
Will let you know how I go.

Re: getting feeling back
Thu, August 3, 2006 - 12:19 PMKristi, I can guarantee that if you try belly dance and stay with it, it will definitely empower you, give you confidence and raise your self esteem. Of course, it also makes you feel sexy and powerful. You will notice a difference in the way you walk and carry yourself. I know I sure did. Since I am not a mother myself, I don't know if belly dance will help with your lower ab muscles, but hopefully it will make a difference. I hope you enjoy your lesson. Let the group know how it turns out, I'm sure we'd all be interested in your input.

Re: getting feeling back
Fri, August 4, 2006 - 4:49 PMSpeaking from my own experience, BD definitely helps with self-confidence, esteem, and how you carry yourself! It might take a little bit of time, but it does happen. I've even gotten to the point where I am not all that nervous about performing (the first time I was terrified - and I've always been terrified/nervous about being in front of a group of people, whether it's speaking, dancing, whatever - even playing charades with friends). I used to be quite self-conscious about my body/figure, but because of the dancing, I've gotten to the point where I look at myself in a mirror and think "Hmmm, I look pretty damn good!"

Re: getting feeling back
Wed, August 9, 2006 - 9:18 AMHi Kristi,
Have had 2 C-Sections myself. One 30 years ago and one 17 years ago. It is the size of a zipper, from my navel, a vertical cut. I hope you start Loving you stomach. I have studied and performed dance for 46 yrs. But started with a huge scar on my knee from an accident when I was 9. These scars are badges of better things to come. We can learn to Love who they make us. Survivors who can pick ourselves up and give something back. If we are thinking about what we have and not what we don't have, no-one will even notice these scars. They will seem like a freckle. And actually some people adore freckles. Am currently teaching belly-dancing and will tell you that it will definately help the strength of your muscles. Visualize pulling your navel back and touching your spine taking a deep breath, then release and blow out your breath. Do this slow at first. Then speed up the process as if you are getting ready for Birth.
Is this a picture of you beautiful Child and You? -

Re: getting feeling back
Thu, August 10, 2006 - 6:24 PMthanks so much for the advice...I loved my first two lessons, unfortunately I was sick as a dog yesterday. Im putting it down to food poisoning or else a virus, and hoping its not the dancing!! Ive had headaches, nausea and feel better today but my abdomen and back are killing me, still a bit headachy too.
Poor little boy is bored senseless because Ive hardly left the couch.
Im not so worried about the scar, it is well hidden down low, but I got a lot of fabbiness below the navel, somedays Im ok with it because to be honest I know it doesnt look that bad, but mostly I hate that its all numb, kinda like Ive been to the dentist and they stuck the needle in my tum.
Mostly I have issues about my body, its inability to birth my son naturally was a biggy for me, and something that I have to work through, and the miscarraige I had two months ago made me feel really low, so I just want to get back in touch with my body and feel confident again within my own skin. I think I will get there in time, I have met some wonderful ladies that are very gentle and supportive and the belly dancing group seem to just as understanding.
