How do you deal with those times where the "money-making" part of the dance gets too pressurising and you are struggling between keeping the passion or the sacredness of your dance and having to survive?

Re: Business vs sacred
Sun, December 19, 2004 - 9:47 AMSandra, I know I am not the best person to answer this because I don't make my living from the dance. However, I do know that many dancers have dance-related businesses that help them "survive" during the rough spots, such as vending dance costumes or designing web pages for dancers.
My thought is that maybe you should pose this question to someone who is in the business of the sacred, such as a minister, rabbi, guru, or the like. I know that everyone experiences burnout every once in a while; what do those people do?
I hope that the pressure is relieved for you soon and you can get back to your "sacred space"-dancing!

Re: Business vs sacred
Wed, March 9, 2005 - 3:26 PMGood question Sandra,
I struggled with this not so long ago when it seemed like all I was dancing at were "souless" gigs, mostly at a specific restaurant in town known to treat their dancers like crap. On the one hand I really needed the big tips that this particular place brings in , but on the other I was missing my regular band rehearsals and dancing just for the joy of it. I finally found a good middle ground by just refocusing on WHY I started to dance in the first place - my absolute love and devotion to the music and dance. I started practicing every chance I got - in the morining, late at night - just reconnecting with the soul of my dance. Also while I am at this particular place I take all my tapes of the live band that I dance with and just lose myself in them while I wait to go back out.
