Hey all, does anyone know where I can get resources/info on teaching some basic bellydance moves to girls ages 10-14? We're learning moves as part of a unit on middle eastern music and dance in our music classes. Thanks

I'd love to get this info too...
I have a recommendation AGAINST something - got it for my daughter, but it was just a veil routine that you do with another person - nothing on basic moves, just the choreography...

Bellydance for Mother and Daughter by Amiramor

There's nothing wrong with it, but it's not what I expected

I don't think the moves for that age group would be any different than what any other basic beginner would get. They would most likely be more flexible so they might have an advantage over the standard adult beginner ;)

No video can replace what you can get from a live instructor… but my video recommendations are:

Delilah's beginner video “Absolute Beginning Belly Dance with Delilah”. It even has a section on costuming and such.

Jasmin Jahal - Reach for the stars. It is a solid video to practice your moves with. She does a good job of explaining the moves.

Both these videos (IMHO) are perfect for the first 2 belly dance instruction videos someone would want to own/try.

Hey Songflower! I've been teaching pre-teen and teen girls for about five years now. It is VERY rewarding!

I have found that it is best to just teach the same moves. I've experimented a bit, and basically a belly dance move is a belly dance move. I do generally refrain from teaching things like reverse camels, not because I think they're bad, but my 14 year olds, who are just starting to blossom, make audience members uncomfortable with what might seem like overtly sexual moves. But in the end, if your teaching dance, then the beauty of it is what will come through. I actually could go on and on, but I I won't. :)

Thanks, this is very helpful. I'm not a trained bellydancer myself, but I want to teach my kids some basic moves in order to futher appreciate the Middle Eastern rhythms we will be learning in music class this month. We will be primarily learning the baladi and maqsoum.
