Hi I have long wanted to learn belly dancing but so many things get in the way, I was looking through the posts and saw that there are videos to learn from. That's interesting, does any one know where to order them. I live in the country and I think the nearest place to learn belly dancing is 60 miles away so I could try with the videos first. Also I would like to learn more about costumes because my belly is very scarred with deep strech marks from pregnancy and I wonder if there are different types of costumes, like a Vshape that would cover the middle to above the belly button and leave the sides open? I would appreciate any help.

Re: New to group
Tue, May 31, 2005 - 1:34 PMHi Judy,
While you're on the internet, why not join our yahoo group
groups.yahoo.com/group/Bel..._by_video/
for students who are learning dance from video.
And join
groups.yahoo.com/group/bellydancevideos
to learn what kinds of videos are out there and which are the best ones.
As far as costuming, there are thousands of styles to choose from, some which cover your belly entirely. Check out www.dahlal.com.
But don't worry about a costume just yet. Get yourself some videos and start learning! Dahlal sells a ton of them, some you can get from amazon.com, some from ebay, some from other dancers.
The Yahoo groups are full of bellydance video experts to help you out!

Re: New to group
Tue, May 31, 2005 - 4:48 PMThanks for the info! I did look around a little at the different styles of costumes and I see there is a wide variety. I'm so excited, can't wait to get started. Now I have to wait to hear from the moderator of the yahoo groups. When I filled out the application I thought it said to tell about yourself in 200 words or less, trying to cut it back to 200 characters was tough! I really never say anything in 200 words or less! LOL -

Re: New to group
Fri, June 3, 2005 - 7:47 AMHi! Wow I'm getting loads of e-mails but I will have plenty of time foer the next couple of days to go through them because I had my dog fixed yesterday and I have to keep her quiet and indoors for a few days. I've started looking at the reviews, the thing I think is great is that real women are telling what they think of the videos and not paid reviewers. I' spend a few days checking out all the info before I order anything, I'll probebly order two at first to compare.
I read somewhere that belly dancing was first created by midwives to help young women strenghten their muscles for child birth and was practiced for all sorts of women's problems including menstral and menopausal poblems. I thought that is interesting, I don't know how true it is. -

Eh - Morocco has had a number of words to say on this subject. Check the archives of Bhuz.com and I'll see if I can't find her post from the MEDance list and forward it to you. In short, it's 90% untrue, but there is a CERTAIN grain of truth to it. Don't believe everything you read about this dance unless you know for certain the source is a good one: Artemis Mourat, Morocco, Andrea Deagon - there are lots of others, but these three publish (or post on email lists) a lot.
FWIW - The lovely book "Serpent and the Nile" while full of beautiful photographs, is mostly BS. Great pics, though! -

Re: New to group
Fri, June 10, 2005 - 3:25 PMYeah, if there's anything I have learned, it's best to do your own actual research. Just because someone speaks with authority, or even just because somebody bought her idea and published her book, doesn't mean she knows what she's talking about. Doesn't mean she doesn't, either, but I am often amused how some belly dancers quote (at least one that I am thinking of) specific dancers as ultimate authorities when I've seen some statements that are absolutely contrary to what I have researched. -

Re: New to group
Tue, June 14, 2005 - 11:21 AMYeah, and even the "experts" don't always agree!
When in doubt, if the source is still alive, email or write her/him. I've learned some absolutely fascinating things from people just by asking them in email, "Did you really say such-and-such? And what did you mean by that?"
