Hello, its going to be my 30th birthday on January 23rd and I purchased this spot for the workshops without realizing that my husband had something else planned for me. I need to sell my spot asap, and I will sell it for a discounted $250. That's $50 less than the original price. This is probably going to be a sold-out workshop, so if you want a chance to go to this, it will be a good opportunity for someone to attend at a discounted price. You can paypal me the money and I will send the workshop host your paypal info so you can get in.

Thanks,
Heather

belly dance community.L ocated in Phoenix, Arizona, her teaching and
performances throughout the Southwestern region have created quite a
demand for her practice of Raks Sharqi. Her focus on isolations and
music interpretation has captivated audiences here in the U.S. and
abroad. As the director, choreographer, and creator of the Black Opal
Dance Company, audiences have had the opportunity to see her creative
dance style amplified by ten. Ava's 2004 Belly Dancer of
the Universe title (Egyptian category) has only furtherd her popularity
with all who have seen her dance. Ava's instructional and performance
dvds have inspired and challenged many who have taken on the task of
studying her elegant example of the modern belly dancer through which
novices and
masters alike will gain challenge and insight

Kami Liddle:
jazz, and bhangra dance. Kami performs both as a solo artist and also
collaborates wh iotther dancers. She is a guest artist for The Indigo,
directed by Rachel Brice, and has also worked with Samatha Riggs of Boom

costuming: need tips for buying off the rack

Due to location my options for costuming is limited to purchasing online or this one annual festival. I have read Flattering Costumes for Bellydancers (Costume Goddess) and found it helpful for figuring out what basic design I should be looking for. What makes me nervous is the process. Last year the vendors with the high ticket pieces were very crowded. I'm not sure if I'll have enough time to talk to the vendors. I'm the type who asks a lot of questions before I spend a lot of money. I like to be an educated consumer. So does anyone have experience buying off the rack at a festival? My concern is that after the show they pack up and leave so basically once I've made the purchase I'll have no recourse if a week later it all falls apart because a thread broke!:(
Also since this is my first time buying a real costume I'd love any tips about what to look for and what to avoid in both the costume and the people I do business with!

Thank you
Amy

Body Image in Bellydance

I deal with a lot of people and I hear a lot of these same two comments:
1. "I want to learn to bellydance but I need to lose weight first"
2. "I don't have the belly to be a bellydancer"

I know it is a paradox! Perceptions so opposite to each other.

Now, in the bellydance community, we well know that this dance is open to ALL, and that includes body types. One of the great things is the diversity with a common passion. One of the things that I love about this dance is that it embraces everyone.

Occasionally I have been told from people who had just found out that I bellydance.
1. You are a bellydancer!? but you don't have a belly!!!!
2. You are too skinny to be a bellydancer.

These comments make me laugh and I brush them off. However, for sometime now, I have been wondering how bellydance has changed the way others look at their body? or , has it? Since having taken up this dance, do you eat differently? do you exercise more (beside the regular dance classes?) Have you been told you cannot or should not be a bellydancer because you don't fit the "bellydancer" body stereotype? Do other people's comments and their concept of what they think a bellydancer should look like effect you physically and/or emotionally?

what would you call the style of Jehan and her dancers?

Jehan and her temple dancers are a group based in New York, I think.
There are a few instructional/workout dvds put out with these dancers.
Some of them include Blanca, Neon (although on her own, Neon's style strays from that of Jehan), oh I forget some of the others, Ayshe and Leyla I think are two others... but anyhow...

I was having a hard time giving a name to their style when I was trying to describe it to a friend... there are a lot of folkloric moves, it's earthy, but there are a lot 'showgirl' moves too that bring to mind cabaret or even jazz.... I resorted to thinking of her style as 'gypsy style' (which is the tag I give anything too diverse-ly influenced for me to understand as one style or another)... but I was wondering if there IS an actual name for that style of bellydancing, that is more universally acknowledged as describing that style.

Invitation to BellyWiki.com (x-post)

Hello -

For the past couple of weeks my friend Kris & I have been putting together the beginnings of a belly dance wiki called BellyWiki. BellyWiki (www.bellywiki.com) is a Wikipedia-style website intended to suppliment the already vast online community of belly dancers and belly dance enthusiasts.

BellyWiki came about because I'd noticed that lots of folks were asking around if there were a big list of moves/drills anywhere online. There didn't seem to be any centralized open-source place for that kind of thing. I thought a wiki would be a great format for this kind of thing because all of the knowledge would be written by the community. This allows for all the 7-bazillion names for each move to be recorded in one place.

I also think it will be a great place to gather all the wonderful linkies to the dancers, musicians, costume makers, etc. so we can all find each other. It can also provide a place where people can learn the history of belly dance and other kinds of information about our beloved art.

I extend participation in this wiki to any and all performers, instructors, students and afficianados of belly dance of all kinds.

I just got the site up on Monday, April 2nd. There's only a few articles so far, all written by volunteers. There's a big list of articles that need to be written and I'd like YOU to start writing them. Please don't be shy! Just follow the Articles Wish List link from the main page of BellyWIki to get started.

If you have any questions about how to work a wiki, or if you run into any technical problems, please message me on Tribe or visit the BellyWiki Tribe http://tribes.tribe.net/bellywiki You'll be able to give feedback there as well as see what's going on with the wiki.

This is the first wiki I've worked with so if you have any suggestions or comments, please feel free to share. I've made this site out of love and respect for the community and I hope you like it! If you have critiques for me, I'm open to hearing them. Just be gentle!

Thanks! Hope to see you on the wiki!

Hi there, just a question - does anyone have experience with being or having a mentor as a dancer? Like someone you not only take classes from but get personal advice on your progress, maybe you send her a dvd to look at, etc? I live in a place where it's difficult to find a teacher locally so I was thinking about approaching someone abroad - any thoughts on that? Thanks!

teaching sword to beginners

hi all, sorry about the crosspost if you see this on other boards, but i need help...

i was asked to give a sword demo at an upcoming event, i'm supposed to teach balancing and presentation and then perform a short piece. i'm going to discuss where to balance, how to get down on the floor, what to do when you're down there, how to get up etc. the problem is, i kind of just learned how to gracefully handle a sword by trial and error. i know what works for me and my limitations, but i' m at a loss for how to describe it to absolute novices. does anyone have any good tips, tricks they use? please share, any info would be greatly appreciated!

ps - cool, the current tribe photo is of me! that was a surprise!

Who are Your Favorite Belly Dance musicians?

One of mine is Phil Thornton in which I'm searching.

He along with Fritz Heede & Micheal Beach (with whom I can find all
over the place) are my three sources for the Best BELLY Dance music
I could or would ever want to hear. That's what I used to use/play
all of the time before I once again (after leaving it for a minute)
am 'back into the Dance'.

This time as many of you know..I have a vested interest beyond the
strictly social & entertainment benefits. Namely my newly started
Foundation. And to learn more about it (and me) please go to:
http://www.myspace.com/linny_g ..plus if you have ANY information on
where
I can find music produced by PHIL THORNTON, then 'e' me
here..thanks!

I might as well tick Tribe off by naming just about all of my other
Group sources (and did I tell you about yahoo.. http://bellydance.meetup.com/11/memb
er/2226428/ and Bhuz.com :-)?),
~Linny~

PS. And join me at MySpace or Tribe as a Friend or Associate if the
Spirit moves you!

Hi,
Some time ago I recorded a full percussion CD called "Deep:Mobile"

I always felt like one track in particular would be great for belly dancing.

Feel free to download it, and use it for whatever you want.
http://www.jakemore.com/xfer/ Its called "05_shekhina.mp3 (right click on the file to download it...let me know if you are having any trouble)

Please credit me should you use it in anything recorded...otherwise, drop me a line and let me know if you liked it/used it.
If you like that, you will probably like the rest of the CD...which is also there, titled "Deep.zip". Feel free to download that as well.

Peace,
Jake

getting feeling back

hi all Im new *waves*

I had an emergency csection with my son nearly 3 years ago and I still have no feeling below my navel area to the top of my csection scar.

Ive always been a dancer (ballet when young, ballroom during my teens and tradition dancing all through).

I was just thinking of belly dancing for some bizarre reason and the moves, I was wondering if maybe I had go at some lessons I might encourage some feeling back...kinda like using dance for healing...but I really hate my tummy at the moment and am nervous.

I emailed a few people to find out about local classes but I can someone tell me if it will be harder because I have a lack of feeling down there?
Is there any type of belly dancing I should consider?

I think I will just try anyways but it would be good to hear from anyone who has had a similar sort of experience.

Thanks...hoping some experienced ladies can help me out.
BDSS in Paris- Costume??

Hi there tribe,

This might be a strange question but I figured the hardcore fans/dancers might know the answer to this one......

In that DVD, Petite Jamila wears a really amazingly beautiful costume. Its Egyptian-themed, with turquiose and orange skirt and papyrus-like symbols on the belt and bra. She wears this during the really cool drum solo part of it, where Sharon Kihara tears it up with Dondi and Ansuya.

Does anyone know where she got that costume? Is it in someone's catalog, or perhaps done by a designer that is well known in the bellydance community?

Thanks everyone!
~Sunayna

PS This topic is posted in a few other tribes as well....trying to cover as many bases as I can to find out :)

Changing/Sharing Teachers

I really like my dance teacher, she has taught me a lot. I live in a small town and the next closest classes are about 45 min away. The only problem I am having is that my teacher seems to be very interested in her always being in the spotlight and not giving the younger dancers any chance to perform so I want to attend another class along with this one so I get a chance to dance. Since it is a small community, I don't want her to hurt her by finding out I am dancing with another teacher as well, but at the same time I don't feel like I can go up to her and tell her all of this. Any advice? Thanks Ladies!

Hello Everyone,

I have to confess to all of you. 6-8 months ago when I created this group it was by accident. I couldn't find a bellydance group and so I created one only to find several later. I had since forgotten about this group and didn't realize so many people had joined LOL. Until a recent spam issue was brought to my attention. I have responded in kind and am pleased that so many people have joined. I promise to be more attentive in the future now that I have a clue. I sincerely apologize. If anyone has any questions or comments please feel free to send me a message. Dance well all of you.

Love and Light,
Wesley

Hi!
I'm moving to San Francisco in 3 days from Philadelphia. I've been involved with belly dancing (cabaret) for two years now and would love to know the best places to take classes. I am also interested in tribal dancing, so any info on the would be helpful too.
Thanks.

Bellydance fundraising movement

I'm posting this for a friend...

I've been thinking:
>
>90% of my family lives in New Orleans and the Mississippi Delta. So I have
>been particularly effected by Hurricane Katrina (I haven't heard from my
>brother and his family or my sister and her husband or my older brother, or
>my aunts, uncles nor cousins ). I have been thinking--can we have a
>bellydance fundraising movement (a Movement Movement?) ? I'm thinking
>everybody everywhere dance on a corner in your community with a donation
>basket this weekend for Hurricane Relief. We could Dance for Dollars?? All
>the money can go to the Red Cross.

MECDA Membership Survey

Hello all! I’m the new MECDA membership officer and I’ve decided to conduct a survey of MECDA members and non-members in order to better MECDA based on your suggestions. Any questions that you can answer would be a great help. We do not need complete surveys so if there are any questions you would prefer not to answer then feel free to leave them blank. Thank you!
Please send your replies to membership@mecda.org or membership_blaize@direcway.com

For members:
1)	What do you think is the best benefit of having a MECDA membership?

2)	What sort of changes would you like to see within MECDA?

3)	What style of belly dance do you follow?

4)	What kind of workshops would you like to attend? What teachers would you like to see brought to your area to teach a workshop?

5)	Which MECDA events are you favorite?

6)	Would you like to see a themed MECDA event? If so, what type of themes would you like to see?

7)	Are you a member of any other belly dance organizations, clubs, groups, etc?

8)	Any other comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

For non-members:
1)	Why haven’t you joined MECDA?

2)	Could we add any benefits to membership that would make it worth your while to join?

3)	Do you attend MECDA events?

4)	What kind of events would you like to see hosted by MECDA?

6)	What kind of workshops would you like to attend? What teachers would you like to see brought to your area to teach a workshop?

7)	Are you a member of any other belly dance organizations, clubs, groups, etc?

8)	Any other comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Need Tribe.net buttons to identify each other!

I'm cross-posting this to the bellydance tribes.

We really should have some kind of tribe button with our id on it, so when we go to workshops and shows we can identify each other. Any thoughts?

PURE Weekend highlights include the following:

• September 24th: 10 - 3pm. PURE workshop.

• September 24th: 4 - 5 pm. PURE participates in a panel on arts and activism at the national Green Festival.

• September 24th: TBD: Hafla!!!

• September 25th: 10 am. PURE Procession on the Mall, along national monuments and historic sites.

•What is PURE?

Public Urban Ritual Experiment (PURE) is a collective of dancers and musicians who have come together to share their love of dance and music with the public for the purpose of healing and peace. With branches around the country, PURE is meant to inspire individuals to reflect on what they can do in the spirit of peace. Each gesture, small or large, contributes to the strength and solidarity we can build in our local and global communities. Go to www.puredance.org for more information.

•Can I participate if I have never taken a PURE workshop before?

Sure! That is why PURE will be having a workshop on Saturday, the 24th, from 10 am- 3pm. At this workshop you will learn what you need to know in order to participate in the procession on Sunday, the 25th! Click here for more information, and to register.

•Can I take the workshop and not join the procession?

Sure! The PURE workshop will be a wonderful opportunity to learn a unique movement vocabulary, as well as an opportunity to dance for a purpose! Whether or not you can make the procession, you are welcome to learn the PURE format, which will unite you with other dancers across the country.

•What if I'm already a PURE member?

If you are already a PURE member, you do not need to take the workshop again. Just come and participate in the procession, the green festival, the UFPJ rally and all of the other events in Washington DC that weekend.

•Where should I stay if I'm coming in from out of town?

We will do our best to find free accommodations for everyone coming in from out of town. Make sure you fill out the information form so that we are aware of your housing needs. Thank you!

Julie tried to post this:

> Hi there. I was just going to post to you on
> your thread on the Belly Dance board, but
> apparently fate or the Internet ether is
> determined that I shouldn't, so I've just
> decided to write to you directly. Twice now
> I've tried to post and it keeps getting eaten,
> so my writer's imagination is starting to think
> that someone out there is trying to tell me
> something. What, I don't know, but something. :
> P So while my belief in Murphy's Law says that
> this message will also get eaten, the stubborn
> part of me has made it my mission to say what I
> have to say. :P And lest you get the wrong
> impression, I'm not trying to hit on you. I'm
> married, which means that while I'd love to be
> able to hit on you, I can't. :P
>
> So here goes: Gregory, you're a drummer, a
> reenactor, a soldier, and a poet. How much
> better can you get? Drumming makes you
> appealing to dancers. A reenactor--hello, men
> with swords always make my little rennie heart
> go pitter pat, so I know that any woman with any
> sense (read, an interest in history and/or
> reenacting) would dig that. And a soldier and
> poet? Helloooo... :P
>
> So it sounds to me like your biggest problem is
> your lack of self-confidence/shyness. As
> someone whose brain shuts down when she gets
> nervous, I know all about this. I consider
> myself very shy (my friends laugh when I say
> this), but I've learned to fake it. :P Like I
> have to tell you that writing this letter to a
> perfect stranger makes my shy side cringe. :P
> But I'm also a very determined person, so that
> kinda balances it out. Quite honestly, if my
> post hadn't been eaten twice, I wouldn't be
> writing this now.
>
> But anyway, back to my point, I've learned to
> fool other people into thinking I'm not shy by
> girding my proverbial loins and forcing myself
> to do things I'm scared to death of if only
> because if I don't, I'll never know what
> could've been. So I fake it--not myself, just
> courage. And if you can handle an Iraqi warzone,
> you can handle the dating zone. Just keep
> reminding yourself that a woman shooting you
> down is nowhere near as potentially permanent as
> an Iraqi with a gun. :)
>
> Take care, stay away from bad guys with guns,
> and good luck in your search for your very own
> belly dancer. :)
>
> Julie
> <who feels like a complete idiot for not just
> trying again on the board, but who's just too
> damned stubborn to not put in her 2 cents :P>

Hi,

I'm producing a show July 16th in Los Angeles and I need to find a dancer for an unusal number. It's for an evening of "paramedical cabaret" put together by my group, Art of Bleeding (see www.artofbleeding.com). The dance has something to do with demonstrating the heimlich maneuver actually.... ah, these shows are hard to explain, but funny in a dark way. I have music, costume elements, projections. Please contact me if interested in more details!

Thanks!

What I saw in the Front Row this week

So I'm new to tribe but not to belly dance, and I just wanted to share this with you from this weekend. I posted this to another community already.

I had the privilege of going to a dance competition this weekend with one of my friends; it was one of the first I had been to though not the first dance performance I had been to. There were some great dancers then there were some really scary dancers.

I have to ask everyone here the following, if your skirt is see-through would you wear an under skirt or at least Underwear?

I mean come on its common courtesy is it not? I would think it was personally.

Now I'm giving the dancer the benefit of the doubt. I will state that maybe she "didn’t" realize that you could see her "Poononi" though her skirt and every time she turned you got an eyeful of her untrimmed area. But my god wouldn’t you at least check in the mirror before going onstage? or even at home?

I am sure I am not the only one who was "scandalized" and "shocked" by the blanket lack of consideration to the people that might be watching her. Didn’t she realize that People so didn’t want to see her ass cheeks and her Crotch? I mean lord that is just nasty man. I have been taught that Belly dance should not be seen like strippers but doesn’t it make it hard to believe that when girls are still doing that shit like it's cool and totally appropriate?

I mean damn, I so didn’t need to see that. If I wanted to watch strippers I would have gone to the titty bar instead of to a dance competition.

Good lord for the love of god if your going to not wear undies in a performance at least make sure you can't see your black hair though the skirt your wearing. At the very least make sure you trim the jungle, because that shit is just scary.

No wonder we have such a hard time getting people to take belly dance seriously.

Well that’s my view from the Front Row. What's everyone else’s?

If there are Suhaila style teachers in the San Jose Area?

I have taken workshops with Suhaila and really enjoyed her teaching style. Unfortunately because of my hectic work schedule and life I cannot make it up to Suhaila's classes. I am interested in finding a Suhaila-esk style teacher in the South Bay.

I was hoping someone could shed some light on any teachers that can help me in the meantime?

Bright Blessings,

Hi I have long wanted to learn belly dancing but so many things get in the way, I was looking through the posts and saw that there are videos to learn from. That's interesting, does any one know where to order them. I live in the country and I think the nearest place to learn belly dancing is 60 miles away so I could try with the videos first. Also I would like to learn more about costumes because my belly is very scarred with deep strech marks from pregnancy and I wonder if there are different types of costumes, like a Vshape that would cover the middle to above the belly button and leave the sides open? I would appreciate any help.

This is a question I have been wrestling with lately and I would love some input from you. What does it mean to be a "Tribal" woman? What does it mean to be a member of a "Tribe"? What does it mean to you and why?

I just started belly dancing 6 wks ago and I LOVE it! But I found it interesting that most of the moves I had already had learned through club dancing and just naturally moving my hips is what I've been learning in my belly dance classes.
I already got to show off my belly dancing moves at a friend's costume wedding they had on April Fool's Day. She wanted me to dance for the guests and I did! What an adrenaline rush! I'm looking forward to doing more.
I'll be attending my first workshop with Hadia of Canada this Sat, with a dinner and show to cap it off with over 30 dancers,
I'm excited!

Rakkasah. Anyone here go to it?

I'm just curious if anyone in this tribe went to Rakkasah? I haven't seen any mention of it here. (But then, there *is* a Rakkasah tribe...)

Anyway,...if you *did* go, what did you think? Did you perform? Did you buy anything? How long did you stay? Which day did you go? Did you go to any workshops?

New tribe for women

http://womanstrength.tribe.net/

Feminism is the radical idea that women are people too.

Did you grow up hearing how a woman's place was in the home? Do people react when you don't fit into their narrow defination of what a woman should be? Do you refuse to let society or, better yet, a man, define who you are, who you should be, what you should do, what you should think, what you should say? Do you bristle in public when you hear a man or another woman shut down a girl or a woman who dares to speak her mind, tell her truth, and dare to be who she is?

Then this is the tribe for you.

This is NOT a mature tribe. Please leave the overt sexual topics and pornographic discussions to the dozens of tribes created for that genre. This tribe is for women to speak their truth without being treated like sex objects.

Just wanted to let you know that there is a new tribe for all of the bellydancers and middle eastern musicians in Colorado. A tribe where belly dancers (and middle eastern musicians) of all styles in Colorado can post events, classes, workshops, share ideas, and connect.

I would like to get some opinions on this problem: I live in cork, Ireland, learned tribal style bellydance for almost 5 years from an american teacher - a great person and the only bellydance teacher in the whole county! Before this I did flamenco and romany dance (I was raised by a romani family) and was teaching other creative things. For about a year I was helping her as an assistant teacher but couldn't share all of her creative ideas 9which to me is no problem). This year I started teaching my own classes in Cork and its going really well. I love it and both of us have our own style and many many students. But my teacher doesn't want to even talk to me! She says she feels betrayed (I swear I din't do or say anything bad! I just want to teach my own classes!) and even though I keep inviting her to haflas and trying to make contact (well, I admit I kind of gave up since a while), she doesn't want to know. It has gone so far that students who want to try out my classes do it secretly, asking me not to tell her! It's like there is a tribal war! it's so silly because all our students could benefit so much from our different styles and do haflas together! It feels quite sad! There is so little of these kind of things going on here anyway but lots of interest, I would love to network more but I don't know anymore how to approach this. (I know, it sounds like a dear-doctor-letter, sorry about this...). Any thoughts?

Dancing with Back Problems

Hey everyone!
I had corrective surgery for scoliosis when I was 14. It was 13 years ago, that I had 4 vertebrae in the middle of my spine fused and had 2 rods put in for support. These rods start between my shoulder blades and end just below my natural waistline.
I started dancing about 5 months ago and haven't had any big problems yet, except a lot of lower back pain. My rib cage doesn't move as much as I'd like it to, either. Though I am sore a lot, this is just sore muscle pain, not injury pain, so on and on I keep dancing. I even take 3 classes a week!
I'm just wondering if there are others like me who still insist on dancing, and are maybe wondering if there are others like them?

Hello everyone,

My name is Che` and I've been belly dancing for about two years now. I'll be graduating from Temple University in May, and have decided to write my Senior paper on Belly dance. If you have any thoughts or stories related to the dance, the community, why you do it or anything else, please share. I'd love to incorporate other dancer's thoughts and experiences into my work.

thanks

Teachers in NY

OK, so in a few months, one of my students is leaving to go to school in New York, and so of course I am looking for someone to teach her while she's there. She's pretty open to any style (though she doesn't care much for Turkish), but I know she'll feel more comfortable in an environment that is similar to the community here. I teach a general tribaret style, so if anyone knows of any teachers in NY that may be remotely similar, I'd love to know so I can send her to the right person.

Thanks, everyone! :)

8/29 Benefit Concert for Mary Ellen Donald

(forwarded from Yosifah Rose):

Hello to my fellow members of the Belly Dance community,

I just spoke to Mary Ellen Donald. She is very sick and will be having surgery for ovarian cancer next Friday. She has asked that those of you who are concerned for her please support her through the benefit concert that the Lammam brothers will be having for her on SUNDAY, AUGUST 29th at 3 p.m.
(Details to be announced by early next week.)

Mary Ellen Donald is a renown Middle Eastern Percussionist, and she has given so much to all of us in the greater Bay Area Middle Eastern Dance community through her music and love of life and dance. Mary Ellen supports herself entirely through her music: through her teaching and regular gigs at the Amira Restaurant. As she recovers from her major surgery in the next couple of months, she will be unable to teach or perform, therefore, this benefit concert is of extreme importance to her immediate financial security. Please keep August 29th open on your calendar for Mary Ellen.

Details of the benefit will be posted soon on her website:
http://www.maryellendonald.com If you are unable to attend the benefit, please consider purchasing tickets anyway to give your support Mary Ellen at this very difficult time.

Hi, everyone.

I've been bellydancing and have recently started teaching bd for pregnant women (with help from experts in psychoprophylactic birth techniques). This new application for bd is not very documented (apart from Delilah's and Shira's sites), and I'm wondering if anybody has any experience with this.

TIA, Shimmies to all!!
